Getting an Employer Identification Number (EIN) for Employees/Subcontractors

If you hire someone to help you, you will need to get an Employer Identification Number (“EIN”) rather than a Taxpayer Identification Number (“TIN”) if you think you’ll pay them more than $600. You can apply for one here. Then, you can have the person working for you fill out a W-9, and you’ll have the necessary info to fill out a 1099-NEC for them if you pay them more than $600.
